RapTalk.net Exclusive Q&A Interview Session w/ Born Unique

Raptalk recently had the opportunity to catch up with one of the best unsigned artists coming out of VA right now, Born Unique. Born Pesci sat down to talk about what he's experienced in his career to date, what new projects he's currently working on and what he's got planned for the rest of 2007 and beyond. Dub MD: Born Unique, What's good?
Born Unique: Chilling my dude, thanks for taking the time to speak wit the kid!

Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now?
Born Unique: I started up in the battle circuit in VA and DC during the mid nineties ripped apart a few mc's and got the attention of my man DJ Rerok who was doing his thing on the mixtapes. So I linked up with Rok and started putting out mixtapes and 12 inches ("Who's the Best?","Boxcuttas","Stick N Move") to get the buzz moving. I did a couple singles with Doujah Raze ("The Dedication" w/ O.C.,"Virginia") that ended up topping the underground charts which helped my name out there on a broader scale overseas wise.

Through that I ended up doing a track called "Real World" on the Snowgoons Babygrande release German Lugers. Around that time I did a CD with J-Love called Bad News Born that made a pretty big impact out here in VA. Supposedly it's the 1st CD J Love has done for someone outside of NY with out a deal so you know that's a good look rite there.

Dub MD: Coming from Fredericksburg, what do you think of the Virginia music scene right now?
Born Unique: I think VA is on the brink of making some major noise. There is so much talent out here its just spread out. You got ya Clipses and Skateboard P's, Timbaland and Missies down in the 757. Trey Songz and Skillz down in 804 making waves its only a matter of time that someone from the Burg or outside of DC that's gonna pop.

Dub MD: A lot of people are saying "Hip Hop Is Dead" lately, how do you feel about the current state of hip hop?
Born Unique: It is what it is really. I can't be mad at it that's not gonna change nothing. Honestly I don't even listen to too much of what's out there to be bothered by it. I tend to listen to my own shit, beat CDs or something classic like some old Mobb Deep.

Dub MD: Do you have any new projects in the works? what's it called & what can your fans expect?
Born Unique: Yeah I'm in the last stages of my new mixtape Boss B.I hosted by Rerok & Doo Wop. Just waitin on the mixdown to this track I did called "The Corner" with Doo Wop, Ras Kass & Termanology. I open up alot on this CD and expose my life to the world moreso than ever on this CD giving the listener a glimpse of my trials and tribulations. I still giving you that raw shit that my fans have come to expect. I'm lookin forward to lettin this out and seeing what the world thinks.

Dub MD: With this album, what producers & artists are you connecting with this time round?
Born Unique: I got a few features on it besides "The Corner" I linked up with The Ranjahzon a track called "Past You By" & Ill Bill of La Coka Nostra & Sha Lumi from QB on the "Stick N Move Remix". I did some other joints with Kool G Rap and a joint with Jojo Pellegrino but Im gonna save those for the next CD. Our in-house producers Sketchman & Pete Twist handled the bulk of the production. I also got a joint with Domingo and a joint called "Thin Line" produced by MoSS.

"You know when Born Unique is on cause I attack the track. Lyrically don't slouch on me either. I think a lot of cats get it twisted and don't give me the credit I deserve on the lyrical tip cause they are so focussed on my delivery."

Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now?

Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other emcee out there?
Born Unique: My presence and my voice are definitely my strong points. You know when Born Unique is on cause I attack the track. Lyrically don't slouch on me either. I think a lot of cats get it twisted and don't give me the credit I deserve on the lyrical tip cause they are so focused on my delivery.

Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as an emcee in 4 words, What would they be?
Born Unique: How about 2 words "Steroid Rap" Balco what up!

Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet are you planning a worldwide tour anytime soon?
Born Unique: Nah I don't necessarily think headlining a tour is something I need to do right now. I don't have any certified hits under my belt. In the mean time I'm gonna keep honing my craft and building my buzz with these mixtapes and radio love. If anything I wouldn't mind hitting the road with an established artist and getting my stage show down pat.

Dub MD: What is on tap for Born Unique for the rest of 2007 and beyond?
Born Unique: Just look out for that Boss B.I. CD wit Wop and Rerok and keep up wit me cause I got enough material right now to release another CD immediately. I would like to put out an official album but I need the right situation. That's been my major drawback is distribution.

Kids in Nebraska and Wichita Kansas need to know who Born Unique is too. So labels if you hear something you like get at ya boy and lets make it happen.

Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?
Born Unique: Yeah thanks for supporting the kid and sticking with my through out my many hiatus's whether it be a jail stint or me just wildin out.
