Raptalk's back with second exclusive question & answer session of the week, this time around with Diplomat's member Tom Gist. Tom Gist took some time out of his hectic schedule to quickly talk about what hes got lined up for 2007, his thoughts on Hip Hop & his thoughts on New York music scene right now. Check out the brand new Tom Gist track & video for "Let It Rain" at the end of the interview, Enjoy! Dub MD: Tom Gist, What's good? Tom Gist: Everything is gravy, working hard. Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now? Tom Gist: I've been on the corner battling, and on funk master flex spinning everyday for a month. Might not be much, but for a New York City independent artist i think it's an accomplishment. Dub MD: Coming from Harlem, what do you think of the New York music scene right now? Tom Gist: I think with more unity it can be as dominant as it once was. I love what the south is doing as far as unity goes.
Dub MD: A lot of people are saying "Hip Hop Is Dead" lately, how do you feel about the current state of hip hop? Tom Gist: Hip Hop could never die because it has no rules or limits. All it can do is fade out in a certain region. Billion dollar industries don't die. Dub MD: Do you have any new projects in the works? what's it called & what can your fans expect? Tom Gist: Always working, got a few mix tapes I'm doing, and a independent film called "The Gaffle" I'm in. Also a few diplomat projects I'm on, it never stops. Dub MD: With this album, what producers & artists are you connecting with this time round? Tom Gist: A lot of up and coming producers, most established is Ron Brownz he did "If It Ain't Harlem" that's getting a lot of love. Shout out to DJ Cocoa Chanelle. "Hip Hop could never die because it has no rules or limits. All it can do is fade out in a certain region. Billion dollar industries don't die." Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now? Tom Gist: I'm Earlylite/Diplomat Records with a few distribution offers on the table. Patience has been one of my biggest assets. Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other emcee out there? Tom Gist: Honestly, i would have to say my name. It's like no other and when you hear my music i doubt you'll say you heard anything like it before. Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as an emcee in 4 words, What would they be? Tom Gist: One Of A Kind. Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet are you planning a worldwide tour anytime soon? Tom Gist: Soon as the world wide promoters cut those checks, I'm there! Dub MD: What is on tap for Tom Gist for the rest of 2007 and beyond? Tom Gist: More consistent music with a message. a few surprises i can't discuss, just no I'm always working, always writing!
Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs? Tom Gist: To all my fans i appreciate all the support and words of encouragement. When my date is set i won't let you down. Shout out to Robert Early, Doo Doo Ray, Tobb Cobaine, and my whole Earlylite/Dipset family...it's a matter of time!
