RAPTALK caught up with Theodore Unit's Trife Da God and we did a little question and answer update so you guys can get a better idea about him and what hes got in the works. Trife talks about His background, thoughts about Hip Hop and what you can expect from him this year, Enjoy!
Dub MD: Trife Da God., What's good?
I'm chilling right now just in the studio trying finish up my next project. Other than I'm just grinding doing a few spot dates here and there and taking care of the family.
Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now?
First off for those who don't know about the kid your not on your A game but I've experienced alot of things. I've been on numerous album such as The Executioners, Marc Ronson, majority of Ghost's lp's, Kay Slay's album and I put out my own album which featured Ghost and myself called "Put It On The Line" and I've done joints with many up and coming artist. And I basically just been touring around the whole world you feel me.
Dub MD: Where did your name Trife Da God come from?
Well I got the name Trife from my man in the hood cause back then my stage name was Wild Child and he just said I need a stronger alias and he came up with Trife cause it complimented my style much better and I just ran with it. And as the years went on my peoples would just call me the God so I put both of the names together and that's how you got Trife da God. But I have many different alias's like New York's Backbone and Trife Diesel, I just try to keep reinventing myself so I don't get bored.
Dub MD: Coming from the NYC, what do you think of the New York music scene right now?
Well for me being from NY the birthplace of hip hop I think the scene isn't where it should be but you can't stay on top forever nobody can so I feel everybody has to get the time to shine. New York has some of the best Mc's in the game today. What was last shall be first and what's first shall be last it's just the cycle of life. New York will always breed the best Mc's and not saying that to discredit anybody else's talent. That's just my opinion.
Dub MD: Alot of people are saying "Hip Hop Is Dead" lately, how do you feel about the current state of hip hop?
I think the current state of hip hop is good it's not great but you have to look at how far it has come. All these major companies use hip hop as a tool to sell their products to the urban communities and they are the one's with big money hitting us rappers off with that bread. I think if hip hop stayed the same through all of these years it would've probably have been dead by now. I can feel why people say that statement cause all you hear now is the same kind of hip hop and the real lyricist don't get their just do. But that's just one man's opinion. Me I live real hip hop.
Dub MD: How did you hook up with the legendary Ghostface Killah back in the day?
I'm a keep this question brief cause this is the most frequently asked question. I hooked up with him cause we were from the same hood and he saw my talent so he scooped me up plain and simple.
Dub MD: Do you have a new album dropping?, whats its it called & what can your fans expect?
Like I said I'm in the studio working on that right now as we speak. It's called "Better Late Than Never" because every where I go the fans always ask when is the album coming and I don't be knowing when so now when they ask I tell them better late than never. Just expect what you been getting from me which is good quality music and me taking y'all a lil bit deeper in to my world. I might get personal with it so listen really close to what I have to say y'all.
Dub MD: Have you been working with any big artists and producers for any of your up coming projects?
You can expect a few big artist on my album but not too many. But if the opportunity presents itself for me to get more big artist on my project than so be it. I would love to work with Dj Premier and Just Blaze but other than that I just fuck with people who got that heat whether you from the sticks in Wisconsin or the mountain tops of Colorodo. If you got something I'm feeling expect me to use that fire.
Dub MD: Whats your label situation like just now?
I got a few things on the table as we speak. I'm about to finish up the paper work and you'll be getting the album I already told you about.
Dub MD: Are you getting into any other business ventures outside music?
Right now I'm still a baby in this music shit. I been around for a lil minute and I'm just starting to take my first steps and paying my dues, but most definitely in the future I want to expand and play with other ventures. I have a few things in mind but you'll see when it's time for things to manifest.
Dub MD: Tell us a little about the Theodore Unit movement?
Well Theodore is a team that GFK put together. It's a crew which is made up of the nicest rappers on Staten. Theodre is Trife Da God, Sean Wigs, Sun God, my Tmf brothers Kryme Life and Tommy Whispers and GFK himself. If you don't know about the movement go pick up that "MORE FISH" album which is a certified banger. And at the same time we're trying to find a situation now for our next collective album so the movement is swell. Shout out the whole Theodore and all those who support us.
Dub MD: Back to the new material when is everything due to be released?
Everything is due to release this summer so stay in tune. I'll get up with you again when the date is closer and do another interview that's my word.
Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet are you planning a worldwide tour anytime soon?
We're always planning a tour cause besides collabos that's how you really eat. This past September I was out in Europe touring with the rest of TU and before that we was in Japan and the love the people showed me and the team was like one of the highlights of my career but for right now I'm planning a US tour sometime in April.
Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as an emcee in 4 words, what would they be?
Energetic, Creative, Influential, and Spontaneous. And I say spontaneous cause I'm not afraid to take chance. Sometimes you have to step outside of what your used to.
Dub MD: What is on tap for Trife Da God for the rest of 2007 and beyond?
Just more flows, more shows and more dough so keep in tune people.
Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?
I just wanna say thanks to RapTalk for having me. Thanks to the fans for holding me down and shout outs to my whole Tmf, TU fam and Staten Island. Check me out on myspace too y'all.
